Autumn at Hintlesham Hall: October and November Breaks in Suffolk
Some houses are made for summer. Hintlesham, we think, was made for autumn. When the beeches in the parkland turn to copper and the mist lifts slowly off the lawns, the old Hall seems to come into its own: fires crackling in the grates, candlelight in the dining room, and the kitchen garden giving up its last squashes and roots to the chef.
If you've been looking for an autumn break in Suffolk, these are the weeks we'd gently suggest.
The season in the house
Autumn is the time to slow down. The lanes are quieter, the light is softer and the days invite long walks followed by longer lunches. Return from the fields with pink cheeks to find a seat by the fire in one of our lounges, each with its own mood: one for reading, one for conversation, one for a nightcap.
Upstairs, our 32 bedrooms and suites are each furnished in their own way, with antiques, rich fabrics and works of art, and many look out across the gardens as the colours turn. Explore our rooms and suites.
In Carrier's Restaurant, the menu follows the season. Our chefs cook with produce from our own kitchen garden and the farms of Suffolk, and autumn is when their cooking is at its most generous.
October at the Hall
For half term, the Hall takes on a more mischievous air. Our Spooky Afternoon Tea runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October (£35, children under 12 £12), and on Saturday 31 October our Halloween Afternoon Tea brings a table magician, a bewitching array of sweet and savoury treats and, of course, scones with plenty of jam and cream (£39.50, children under 12 £18.50). It's become a much-loved family tradition here. Discover afternoon tea at Hintlesham.
November at the Hall
As November arrives, the house begins its quiet turn towards Christmas.
On Wednesday 11 November, six guests join Executive Chef Lee Cooper in the kitchen for our Winter Cookery Demonstration, followed by a three-course lunch of the dishes he has prepared (£110). On the evenings of 19 and 26 November, our florist Kaye Souter leads a wreath-making evening by the log fire, with mulled wine and canapés (£75).
From 20 to 22 November, the grounds fill with the stalls of the Suffolk County Christmas Fair: more than 150 makers, artisan food and drink, and Father Christmas strolling among the visitors. Tickets are sold in advance by the organisers. It's a wonderful weekend to stay over, with your shopping done on the doorstep and a warm room waiting.
Our Festive Lunches begin on Monday 23 November, and on Saturday 28 November our Mrs Brown's Boys Comedy Dinner promises an evening of laughter (£72.50, with rooms from £165 B&B). See everything that's on at the Hall.
Autumn breaks in Suffolk: walks for a golden afternoon
Hintlesham lies close to the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, so some of the county's loveliest autumn walks begin within a short drive.
Wander the gentle 3km loop at Pin Mill, through heath and woodland beside the River Orwell. Follow the paths of Wherstead Woodlands, around 8km through ancient trees and the villages of Freston and Wherstead. Watch the estuary birds at Orwell Country Park. Or walk in John Constable's footsteps along the Stour at Flatford Mill, where he painted so many of the scenes that made his name. Find more local walks.
If you're travelling with your dog, our dog-friendly rooms mean they're part of the adventure, and our team will happily share their favourite local walks.
